(그런데) 모든 것이 그것을 막는다. 일념으로 거기에 전념하는 사람은, 삶이란 강의 세찬 물살을 거슬러 올라가는 연어와 같다. 진정한 구도자는 진실로 삶을 온전히 살아 모든 것을 한계까지 시험해 보고나서 자유에 대한 열렬한 갈망을 채울 수 있는 게 이승에는 없다는 것을 추호도 의심 없이 깨닫는다. 상처와 실망, 공동체에 대한 필요성 또는 대안이 되는 삶의 양식에 대한 낭만 등으로 인하여 생긴, 영성에 전념하는 사람의 자유에 대한 열망은, 설혹 그것이 깨달은 사람과 관계함으로써 개발되었을지라도 그것만으로는 결코 충분치 않다.
